This fall, I will be attending TU Delft's Integrated Product Design graduate program. Out of all the schools I applied to, this was the one I felt had the lowest chance of accepting me, but I am glad to have been proven wrong!
The more I contemplate design and its respective disciplines, the more I want to pursue it as a science rather than an art by finding new ways to improve our practice and our creations through research and development. The area of environmentally sustainable design is one I have particular interest in. So much science and engineering work have been applied to this issue, but I believe it is design that will ultimately make sustainability the rule and not merely an exception.
Not to restate my application essay, but part of the reason I chose Delft is because their focus on sustainability is embedded in to many of their disciplines, not just design. While many design programs teach sustainability to some degree, it seems to have been common practice at Delft for some time. What also seems to be common practice there is academic rigor. It seems I have some catching up to do.
